According to telegraph news, Clear Mobitel will conduct the trial for Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in an area centred on Caradon Hill in East Cornwall. The company said, It will “assess the performance of LTE to provide viable solutions in providing high speed broadband services to the rural consumer”.
The company has been working for over a year to attain a license to operate in the 800MHz band in Cornwall. The scheme is not related to the bids to connect Cornwall’s “not-spots” to broadband which are being funded by a European Union grant.
Harpal Mann, chief executive and founder of Clear Mobitel, said: “This is a trial which has global ramifications for rural economies that have been shattered by the effects of the global recession.”
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has also conducted trials of LTE technology, which have achieved 31 megabits per second upload speeds and 100 megabits per second download speeds. Those tests, however, used a different frequency to Cornwall’s trial. Earlier this month, NSN conducted the first phone call using the same frequency as that being trialled in Cornwall. Now people hope soon to enjoy ultra fast broadband access with LTE.
