YouTube Launches Improved Leanback for Google TV

YouTube has unveiled YouTube Leanback, a new and more TV friendly version of YouTube. YouTube Leanback has been launched just ahead of the arrival of Google TV. And it’s had some work done to it in the three months since it made its beta debut in July. The UI has been completely changed and it is much more user-friendly now. Now you can easily navigate through videos using the four directional arrows on the keyboard. Its now a TV channel to be viewed easily from 10-feet. You should now be able to watch any video in the YouTube catalog in Leanback mode.

Though you don’t have to use Google TV to use Leanback. It will work on any PC and any browser, and it’s worth playing around with. But its specially improved for Google TV. The down button opens up a navigation menu, where you can browse a collection of videos based on categories such as entertainment or music. You can also access your video playlists or just watch random videos. Hitting “up” opens up the quick search box. I tried out Leanback and must admit had a great time playing around on the new interface. Google TV is all about bringing the internet onto the users television. Google insiders report that YouTube Leanback users watch twice as much videos as regular YouTube users.

YouTube Leanback is a user interface designed to make viewing YouTube videos feel much more TV-like. And though it works on the Web as a whole, it’s been designed for televisions and living room devices which connect to the Internet. All YouTube videos should now be viewable, but those more suited to the Leanback experience are promoted front and center. All will play in high quality and all will now come with the same pre-roll and overlay ads they would have on the regular YouTube. Previously some clips, primarily music videos, had not been available for the new format, due to licensing issues.
Leanback, which had previously been ad-free, will now start showing you the preroll and overlay ads that you’re used to seeing on regular YouTube. This'll also a revenued generating system for Google.
