Google CEO Unveils NFC-capable Nexus S and Android Gingerbread

Google CEO Eric Schmidt officially unveiled Gingerbread in Web 2.0 conference, the latest version of their popular Android mobile operating system and also show the  the Nexus S with Gingerbread OS running second Googlephone. The Nexus S manufactured by Samsung and will be the first Android smartphone to support interaction through Near Field Communications, or NFC, which would enable you to do everything from trade contact information to pay for a cup of coffee with just a wave of your phone.
As for Android 2.3, Schmidt says the operating system will be rolling out over the next few weeks, although he did not specify which devices would come with Gingerbread pre-installed or be eligible for an update. Although, Schmidt refused to name Samsung as the manufacturer of the device but did confirm that it would run Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread OS in the coming weeks. The tech specs of the device has not been revealed as yet but a new feature was mentioned for the Nexus S. The Nexus S, however, is slated for a T-Mobile debut, so you can at least bank on being able to buy Gingerbread on that. Reportedly, the Google Nexus S smartphone will be an upgraded version of the Samsung Galaxy S with Gingerbread or Android 2.3 features. The device may support FaceTime-style video chat through a front camera.

Schmidt also made a nod towards the Chrome OS, arguing that the project wasn’t dead, and defining the niche it was meant to fill. According to Schmidt Android is for the device with touch interfaces and Chrome OS is for keyboards. You can watch the video here:
