The fourth quarter was not good as per financial results of Nokia it forced to Nokia to think one more time to shift to another operating system to retain its leadership. Nokia understand that it can't lead in smartphone market with the Symbian OS as another leading brand Samsung has already been dropped Symbian platform. According to source Nokia planing to change its strategy.
Stephen Elop, chief executive officer of Nokia, during a recent conference call said, "Nokia faces some very significant challenges. The game has changed from a battle of devices to a war of ecosystems and competitive ecosystems are gaining momentum and share. The emergence of ecosystems represents the broad convergence of the mobility, computing and services industries."
"Nokia must compete on an ecosystem-to-ecosystem basis. In addition to great devices, we must build, catalyze, and/or join a competitive ecosystem. In addition to great device experiences we must build, capitalize and/or join a competitive ecosystem. The ecosystem approach we select must be comprehensive and cover a wide range of utilities and services that customers expect today and anticipate in the future."
Nokia is still the largest maker of smartphones but its market share is down because the competitors utilizing Google Android operating system and taking smartphone market. The Nokia has to alone develop technologies that its competitors get as a result of collaboration with Google or Microsoft. After the companies like Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG and Motorola have shifted to Google Android OS and their phones have done very well to capturing the market share from Nokia's hand. Nokia also have its another operating system Meego as an option. Though Nokia nothing said directly that it would start using Google Android or Microsoft Windows Phone 7, but Nokia may announce a strategy shift in 11 February 2011.
