China's Baidu Search Engine About to Launch Mobile OS

As I reported earlier the popular search engine in China Baidu is said to be working on a smartphone operating system named Quishi mobile OS which will be copied from Google's Android OS. Now Baidu has launched a new mobile application system "Yi Platform" similar like Android Market, which can be used by developers to develop and distribute mobile applications.

According to news from ChinaDaily, Xu Yingchun, executive director of Baidu, said at the annual Baidu Technology Innovation Conference, "The Yi Platform, which is based on Google Inc's Android mobile operating system, can be used by software developers to creating applications such as games, music and book tools that they can distribute through the platform. Yi will lower the cost, share users and increase traffic for developers. The service will also facilitate mobile phone manufacturers."

Wang Jin, Baidu's vice-president, told Dow Jones Newswires that the company is not ruling out the possibility of eventually developing its own operating system. Baidu plans to cooperate with cell phone makers and produce tailored products with the platform, which will add the company's cloud-computing services to handsets.

Alibaba Group, the start-up company Xiaomi Corp, which was founded by the Chinese Internet guru Lei Jun, released a smartphone costing $313 in August with own mobile operating system called Aliyun. The phone offer 100-gigabyte cloud base storage for each user.

Huawei has also launched its first mobile phone offering cloud-based services in early August, and Sina Corp rolled out a line of smartphones catering to those using its micro-blogging service Weibo.

Baidu got all the profits in China after Google's closed its market from China. Now Baidu trying to go step ahead with mobile OS copies from Android. And the new app platform launch surely a new step towards developing its own mobile operating system. The new Mobile OS and developer platforms will reduce the cost of smartphones and applications as well.
