The upcoming version of World's low cost Tablet Aakash, the Aakash 2 will be made in India completely. According to new statement by HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal, the Aakash 2 tablet will be manufacturer and assembled in India only.
The aim is for faster productions of tablets and to distribute it in wide area of users and to reduce the cost same time. Currently only IITs and the ITI were working on the development of the tablet with UK-based manufacturing company Datawind and its hard produces enough units to distribute nation wide. To overcome this government is looking at the production of 22 crore units of the tablet to accommodate the needs of a wide range of users. To achieve this target of bigger production, the government will encourage more companies to join this project along with Datawind.
At en event of Indian Semi Conductor Vision Summit in Bangalore, chief guest the HRD Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal talked about this plan of purely Indian version of upcoming Aakash tablet 2. They also want with production of the Aakash 2 tablet provides the possibilities for R&D institutions, developers, electronic production houses in country.
The features and specifications of Aakash 2 is expected as better upgrade of Aakash-1 Tablet with 800MHz processor and 1GB RAM to make it better and powerful than current version of Aakash. The availability is expected around April 2012.
Currently the components in the Aakash tablet like the processor, board, etc are imported from outside of India with the help of Datawind they'll assembled later with other parts here in India. But now with the government planning for all type of production and manufacturing right here in India to make large units of tablet available sooner than before.
Mr. Kapil Sibal also said that the government will distribute this low-cost Aakash tablets across different institutions across the country for free in order to promote e-learning. The current cost of Aakash is Rs. 2276 (around $46), which is for one lakh pieces production. The government aim to down the cost to as low as Rs. 1500 (around $30). This'll be for when the number of production increase to one million units. The half of cost would be subsidized by the Government of India and the remaining Rs. 750 would be funded by educational institutions where they distribute it and the student will get it for absolutely free of cost.
Currently government distributing the basic Aakash tablet with Android 2.2 and Datawind also selling two commercial version of this Aakash tablet as Ubislate7 with Android 2.2 and Ubislate7+ with Android 2.3 available for everyone.
