Nokia 7110 The First Web Phone that Redefined Mobile Phones

The Nokia 7110 was the first mobile phone with a WAP browser which let you to browse the internet in phone and also the first media phone. It was announced in February 1999 and released in October 1999. The Nokia’s transformation into a mobile phone company also changed the world.

Nokia 7110:First Web Phone
In 1996 Nokia had a turnover of €6.5 billion after conquering the Americas and Asia with its handsets. And that figure was heading towards €30 billion as the millennium approached. In 1999 people who really “got” the internet were blown away when Nokia launched the first Web phone. That was the year Nokia World became everybody’s world and the Nokia 7110 is the phone that launched the race to fully harness the internet on a handset.
Dubbed the Matrix phone, after the appearance of a very similar device in the hit movie starring Keanu Reeves, everyone wanted one. The Nokia 7110 had a spring-loaded cover concealing the keypad, which was inspired by the film The Matrix in which Neo used a Nokia 8110 modified by the film's production crew to have such a cover.

It was the forerunner of every phone until the rise of today’s touchscreen devices. It had predictive text, messaging, email and web-search on its 96 x 65 pixels screen. Nokia 7110 was released in Dark green color and the Dimensions was 125 x 53 x 24 mm, 125 cc and Weight was 141 g. And that roller thingy for navigating. You could even download ringtones to it, but few owners bothered changing the Nokia Tune. It was considered to be one of the first true media phones with WAP and messaging capabilities.
The Nokia 7160 was TDMA equivalent of the Nokia 7110. The Nokia 71** series of cellphones in general featured a special, navi-roller button.
The graphics of this phone were pretty basic and the web access was pretty slow. But it all worked and it was state of the art. The promotional video, above, might not have much impact now, but in 1999 it made everyone’s jaw drop faster than you could open the keypad’s sliding cover.

But the Nokia 7110 was perhaps most important because it sparked everyone’s imagination about what mobile phones could become. The Nokia 7110 was one device that redefined mobile phones. Here the original promotional video of Nokia 7110:
